Hakka: The "Guest" People

A Brief Introduction to the Hakka Diaspora from China to Jamaica and Canada.

In this presentation, Jeanette Kong gives an overview of the Hakka Chinese migration from China to Jamaica and then to Canada. In southern China, the Hakka worked in rice paddies as farmers. The first migration from China to Jamaica occurred in 1854. Immigration continued to Jamaica for the next 100 years as the Hakka transformed from indentured labourers to merchants who sponsored relatives to work in their businesses. In the early 1970s, many Jamaican-Chinese immigrated to Canada and the U.S. Kong concludes with the contribution and influence of the Hakka on Canadian society.
